Extracted Honey Production

If you decide to aim for extracted honey the first year, you’ll do a few things differently. You’ll load your frames with reinforced foundation, having wires running through it. You can buy this type of foundation, or you can buy plain foundation and do your own wiring and embedding. Frame wiring kits and wire embedders are available from beekeeping equipment suppliers.

You will place supers one on top of the other, so that the first is on top of the deep super, the next one you place is on top of #1, and the third will be on top of #2. Note this is the reverse of the method used for cut-comb honey production.

And for frames filled to overflowing with honey, you will reduce the number of frames in the super from ten to nine or even eight, and space the frames an equal distance apart. The result is that the bees build the combs thicker, putting more honey into each frame. This makes uncapping — cutting off the top layer of wax from each face of the frame — much easier. Don’t use this system when starting with only foundation in the frames; wait until the foundation has been used once and the cells are formed, otherwise the bees may build combs in that vast space between the frames.
